I'm a professional organizer and this is my 10-Step Decluttering Challenge for 2025 – it'll streamline your home with ease

This year, I'm all about supporting practicality, ease of use and a simple way of thinking. After all, if a well-organised home reflects a clear and tidy mind, there's no better time than now to get rid of clutter and sort ourselves out.

Starting with small, manageable tasks such as clearing clutter from paper documents, organising kitchen containers, and setting up a collection point for donations is a sensible approach to tackling disorganisation.

Are you prepared for the test ahead in the upcoming year?

My "Clear Out" Challenge 2025

1. Declutter with purpose

later down the line.

.

Space in your home can evoke emotion, can't it? Does it feel peaceful and welcoming? Or perhaps invigorating and motivating? Let that atmosphere guide your decisions on what to keep and what to discard. The advantages of a lovely and well-organised home should not be overlooked.

– just like a comfortable mattress, a gripping novel, or a soothing scented candle. Release distractions that are not uplifting (eyeing the washing pile, I suppose, or out-of-date gizmos and gadgets).

By synergising your surroundings with your objectives, you're not merely decluttering – you're creating an environment that effectively complements the life you wish to lead.

2. Begin with modest beginnings

Begin with one small task, such as clearing a single shelf in the bathroom. By achieving something simple right away, you'll feel a sense of accomplishment, which can motivate you to tackle more substantial tasks later on.

We recommend giving it a go and seeing just how much you can achieve in that time. It's truly astonishing how invigorated you'll feel after a brief session!

It's probably time for you to consider releasing something that you no longer need or recall having.

3. Contain your supplementary storage

a real chore.

.

to make it easy to retrieve what you need, without creating a huge amount of work for yourself.

4. Clear out the paper clutter

Before you know it, paperwork can mount up.

Arrange your papers into three categories: things to keep, items to shred, and materials to recycle.

You can simply toss outdated bills and unwanted junk mail in the rubbish.

.

I'm not able to comply with that request.

5. 'Digging deeper' is often all we need to do to uncover hidden treasures!

You're referring to the drawer whose contents are often a jumbled mess – a reservoir of miscellaneous items such as old receipts, a few loose keys, and possibly some spare chargers sticking out of the pack.

.

This overlooked drawer usually contains objects you weren't aware you possessed, and clearing it out can feel like discovering a treasure trove – or simply getting rid of clutter it's best to eliminate.

6. Clearing Out the Bathroom Cabinet

.

Get everything out and categorise it into products for skincare, haircare, and other types of medicines and unordered goods. Discard any expired or no longer needed products, such as dried-up mascara and old sunscreen.

before getting started.

7. Clear up your child's mess

Children are remarkably skilled at collecting clutter - think toys, arts and crafts materials, and clothes that rapidly become too small. Encourage them to become involved in the process by turning it into a fun activity.

And the same way, you help us understand how you work so we can enhance the service and make it more helpful for everyone.

.

Whether it's arts and crafts, DIY projects, or reading, make sure to keep your materials organised at home.

8. Apply the "What Even Is This?" test

You know that drawer or shelf back home where you typically find obscure items that make you wonder, 'What on earth is this doing here?'

If it can't find value in what you're asking, acknowledge it, grasp the insight it's given you (that, for instance, you have too many clothes) and let it go.

Actually, if you're not quite sure what something is, unable to recall why you own it, or it doesn't bring you any joy, it's probably safe to say you're no better off for it. Let it go and you might just find you enjoy the extra room.

"9. 'Create a Home for Everything'
When we talk about the KonMari method, one of the key principles is 'Create a Home for Everything'. This means that you have a designated place to store each item in your home.
To illustrate this, if you have a book, you should designate a place for it on a bookshelf or in a bookcase. This way, when you decide to watch television, you'll have a tidy and comfortable space to enjoy it.
This idea can be applied to any item in your home. Whether it's a toaster, a pair of gloves or a set of keys, you can create a home for it and keep your living space clutter-free.
The benefits of creating a home for everything are numerous:
1. **You'll be able to find things easily.**
2. **You will not have to waste time searching for misplaced items.**

Decluttering is often hindered by not knowing where items in your home normally reside. When clearing clutter, ensure each item has a designated place to be stored, such as a drawer, dustbin, or shelf.

and keeping rooms orderly.

10. Inaugurate a Donation Platform

It has robust, long-lasting handles.

.

Every day, sort through the number of items that corresponds to the number of days in your current month, and get rid of one item per day by putting it in your rubbish bin.

Making time for yourself and organising things sensibly really helps manage a cluttered situation.
