We branded it as a "handheld designed specifically for PC gamers." Its impressive 8.8-inch QHD+ display with a 144Hz refresh rate, combined with AMD’s Ryzen Z1 Extreme CPU and RDNA 3 graphics, provided top-notch gaming performance. At CES 2023, Lenovo unveiled the more compact Lenovo Legion Go S, revamping the design of its original Legion Go handheld and introducing one highly sought-after feature: SteamOS.

The new Legion Go S comes with a 8-inch WQXGA LCD display, featuring a resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels, a 120Hz refresh rate, and VVR capabilities. The layout of the controller remains largely unchanged but this model has a fixed design, a few fewer buttons under the left D-pad, and a smaller touch-sensitive pad is available.

Key features include two USB4 ports, a headphone jack, and a microSD slot. The Legion Go S is available in two colour options that change depending on the operating system users choose. Both come with either an AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme or Ryzen Z2 Go processor, which was co-developed with Lenovo and exclusive to the Legion Go S.

I found SteamOS to be impressively adept for navigating through less demanding graphics-intensive content.

Navigating the menu and selecting games on this product seemed as quick as using a Steam Deck, possibly even more so, given its advanced internal hardware. Pressing different buttons and triggers had a similar feel to the more substantial Lenovo Legion Go.

Some people have been critical of Microsoft's apparent lack of enthusiasm for the growing market for handheld gaming PCs. Whilst the SteamOS version of Entity's product had a similar feel to the Steam Deck, the Windows 11 version was a departure from this, particularly when used with the Glacier White Lenovo Legion Go S.

This open-world racing game is considered one of the best of its kind, and yet it's nearly five years old. It performed smoothly at mid-to-high graphical settings.

Although we weren't able to test it properly during our hands-on trial with it.

Although Windows 11 makes it simple to use Xbox Game Pass or other store launchers such as Steam, the Epic Store and GOG, Microsoft's operating system still restricts it in this configuration, much like other handheld devices.

Lenovo Legion Go S: The Price and Availability
The Lenovo Legion Go S mini gaming keyboard costs £129.99. It will be available in two colours, depending on the region:

The graphic is handled by the popular NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti. This GPU has been previously tested several times in this office, and has consistently impressively efficiency and performance.
First up, we benchmarked the Lenovo laptop with Cinebench R20's elaborate physics test. This measures multi-threading processor function and we're pleased to report a score of 937 cb points.
Other tests also pit the GPU against a range of scenarios - albeit four ranges only. But it's reassuring to know that even in a demanding workload, the system responds without lag.

The Lenovo Legion Go S makes some smart advancements by providing two distinct models that cater to a range of gaming tastes.

Thus far, the SteamOS version delivers a sleek and refined handheld experience, merging nicely with Valve's Steam platform to offer polished performance, responsive controls, and an uncomplicated user interface. The Legion Go S genuinely feels like a refined update to the aging Steam Deck.

Concurrently, the Windows 11 model offers greater flexibility for gamers, but faces similar potential drawbacks as other Windows-based handhelds, such as awkward menu navigation, inconsistent touchscreen sensitivity, and more.

With the release of Windows 11 version imminent, it'll be essential to see how this new operating system can handle more visually demanding games upon our in-depth evaluation. The Lenovo Legion Go S could, however, be the definitive gaming handheld for 2025 regardless of the system you choose.
