Major change at London's 'best airport' could finally see budget flights take off

City Airport is a popular destination for passengers.

The plan is to build an electric vehicle charging point within every home in London by 2025. This makes London the second city to achieve energy agile infrastructure in the UK.

There aren't many airlines to choose from for flights.

Just 90 aircraft leave every day, a tiny fraction compared to London Heathrow, where an average of 650 flights take off.

Maybe we should check the following airlines: ITA Airways, KLM, Loganair, LOT Polish Airlines, Lufthansa, Luxair, SWISS, Aurigny and Air Dolomiti.

Budget travellers may find themselves having to use more crowded and less convenient airports in order to get cheap flights.

But that could all be about to change, as London City Airport has submitted a request to the Civil Aviation Authority to facilitate the use of a different type of aircraft, the A320neo, to operate take-offs and landings on its runways.

Crucially, the A320neo is a model flown by low-cost airlines, such as Jet2, Wizz Air and Easyjet, which do not currently operate flights from London City, but this alteration could make that feasible.

A spokesperson for the airport said that, if approved, the new model would 'reveal a variety of novel flight paths for passengers.'

The spokesperson stated: "The airport views the introduction of the A320neo as a vital component in developing its leisure offerings."

‘The aeroplane can accommodate more than 180 passengers, dependent on the seat layout chosen, and is capable of travelling over 1,000 kilometres, covering vast areas of mainland Europe.’

Global news has contacted Jet2 and WizzAir for a statement. A spokesperson for EasyJet stated there are 'no plans' to operate from London City Airport, instead reiterating its focus on expanding at London Southend, its tenth UK base, this spring.

In August 2024, the authorities gave their permission for London City Airprot to boost its yearly passenger limit from 6.5 million to 9 million by 2031.

Alison FitzGerald, CEO of London City Airport, also stated, 'The potential introduction of the A320neo aircraft at London City Airport is truly thrilling.

‘It would widen the variety of recreational spots available to our passengers, provide the opportunity for expansion without increasing flights, bring in much-needed economic growth, and speed up the transition to newer, cleaner, quieter aircraft.’
