Tech shares knocked by shock rise of Chinese AI chatbot DeepSeek

A new challenger surfaced in the booming artificial intelligence market, posing a potential disruption to the industry.

Alphabet and Amazon's parent company also went down.

A breakthrough app has shot to the top of the download charts on Apple's App Store in the UK, US and China, forcing a reassessment of the artificial intelligence sector.

Google's Gemini, but also numerous other prominent technology companies developing artificial intelligence, have been perceived as virtually untouchable, with a dominating global lead in AI.

But DeepSeek's swift appearance, and claims of matching the performance of ChatGPT, which it claims was developed at a significantly lower cost, is prompting a reassessment of the AI market aspect.

China's access to US-made cutting-edge microchips that are critical for training artificial intelligence models has been heavily restricted since the US government stepped up controls on exports to China in 2021.

As a consequence, Chinese AI companies have started collaborating more openly with one another and exploring alternative methods for enhancing performance, leading to the creation of AI models that utilise significantly less processing power and, consequently, possess a lower price tag than initially anticipated.

This context has driven the rapid growth and upheaval of the sector's terrain.

It sets the tone for a significant week ahead in the industry, with leading Silicon Valley companies including Meta and Microsoft due to announce their most recent financial statements, while Apple's figures are programmed to be released later on Thursday.

Downing Street avoided commenting on Monday's market fluctuations, but assured the public that the development of DeepSeek wouldn't put the UK's AI industry at risk of falling behind the rest.

The Prime Minister's official spokesman stated that the UK has "considerable expertise in AI", and also boasts "several very strong players in the industry", including DeepMind.

He added: "But our capabilities go far beyond that, and the Secretary of State and the Prime Minister have outlined a comprehensive strategy to build on our advantages, while also making sure the public sector and the public as a whole can benefit from AI in their daily lives."
