GTA Vice City: Next-Gen Edition fan project released, as modders double down despite heat from Take-Two

A fan group has reaffirmed its intentions to transfer GTA: Vice City features into GTA 4's platform, following a reported move by publisher Take-Two Interactive to act preventively and quash the project.

Initially, players who invested in Grand Theft Auto 4 had to own a genuine copy of the game in order to play it.

The group has undergone a change in plans after its YouTube channel detailing its progress was unexpectedly removed - a development they have attributed to Take-Two. Following Take-Two's "cruel move", the project is now released, permitting it to operate independently, and is no longer reliant on players purchasing Grand Theft Auto 4.

Friends, you're probably already aware that two days prior to its launch, Take-Two Interactive unexpectedly removed our YouTube channel without any prior warning or attempt at communication," reads a statement by Revolution Team. "A considerable amount of time and effort was put into the channel, entailing hundreds of hours of live streams specifically focused on the mod's development.

One notable issue was our loss of connection with overseas viewers who made up a sizable segment of our community. The teaser trailer for GTA Vice City Nextgen Edition garnered over 100,000 views and 1500 comments within a day. Disappointingly, the channel was taken down irretrievably.

The days since the channel's removal have been "emotionally challenging", stated Revolution Team.

The top priority is that we went live with the project on the agreed-upon date, as stated. It's unclear for how long it will remain available to the public or if there will be calls to remove it. We're not opposed to the project being reuploaded, but we can't publicly advocate for that to happen. Do what you think best.

The Revolution Team had initially intended to release the project with a requirement that players had to own the original GTA 4 game, which they said was meant as a "mark of respect to the publisher". "However, over the past couple of days, we have pulled it all to bits and rebuilt the project from scratch, and it is now available as a complete, standalone installation ready for use."

One can find footage of the function in action on YouTube, and it's available to view below.

This is not the only Grand Theft Auto (GTA) modification to draw attention in recent times.

This is not a formal DMCA notice, but rather a mutually agreed-upon removal, and we're on good terms with Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive.
