This annual event is a poignant tribute to the six million Jewish people who tragically lost their lives during the Holocaust, and it also honours the many millions of others who suffered a similar fate at the hands of the Nazis, as well as those who perished in subsequent genocides.

The Prince and his wife, who would later become the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, attended a ceremony to commemorate the 75th anniversary in 2020, whereas the Duchess also met and photographed Holocaust survivors at Kensington Palace.

Kate, 43, made a surprise reappearance in public earlier this month, expressing gratitude to the medical staff at The Royal Marsden hospital in the capital, where she had undergone her cancer treatment.

She later stated it was "a relief to be in remission now" and expressed enthusiasm for what she expected to be a fulfilling year to come.

The Holocaust Memorial Day Trust has urged people across the UK to join in a 'national moment' by illuminating candles and placing them in their windows at 8 pm on Monday.

Nationwide, famous buildings and monuments will be illuminated in purple as a gesture of unity.

The King has visited Auschwitz in Poland for a commemoration, where he will take part in a ceremony on Monday afternoon alongside survivors and other high-ranking officials at the site of the former concentration camp.

Prior to the ceremony, Charles visited the Jewish Community Centre in Krakow, which he had opened in 2008. Upon arrival, he met with Holocaust survivors and greeted numerous onlookers outside the centre, with some extending their hands to be shaken and others using their mobile phones to take photographs of his visit.

In a speech at a major centre, the British monarch referred to Holocaust Memorial Day as "a moment when we reflect on how low human behaviour can be when evil is allowed to thrive, having gone unnoticed for too long on a global scale".

He cautioned: "In a world still plagued by unrest and conflict, and marked by the resurgence of antisemitism, there can be no more significant message...

Breaching the horrors of yesteryear remains a fundamental responsibility.
